The Shard

The Shard, also referred to as the Shard of Glass, Shard London Bridge and formerly London Bridge Tower, is an 87-storey skyscraper in London that forms part of the London Bridge Quarter development. Currently the tallest building in the EU and taking central stage in the London skyline with construction costs of over £440 million.

It was designed to maintain its stability under very onerous conditions with its post-tensioned concrete and composite floors, load-bearing pillars and tapering shape giving it a sway tolerance whilst offering office space, restaurants and The Shangri-La Hotel. Due to its proximity to London Bridge Railway and Underground stations and its surrounding area there are a great deal of civil and structural engineering specialisms that you would only find in a high profile project like this.
