First installation of EHV cable in a live underwater rail tunnel.
Location
Kent, UK
Client
ElecLink, Groupe EuroTunnel
Main Contractor
Balfour Beatty
Value
£2.2m
Challenges and Solutions:
Access to the EuroTunnel site required security vetting and clearance, limiting the number of personnel available to work on site.
Robust planning was required in relation to deliveries as third parties were not authorised past the main entrance.
Maximum traffic management closure length of 100m was in place requiring methodical programming.
Where the main ducts crossed under an existing service a clearance of 300mm was required resulting in excavation depths of over 2.0m.
A mixture of traditional trench boxes and lightweight shoring were used to ensure the trench was supported and productivity on site was maintained.
