The blu-3 team understands that innovation drives the future of the business, creates competitive advantage and engenders client confidence in the company’s ability to deliver added value.

blu-3 is acutely aware that the construction and infrastructure sectors are changing rapidly with the incorporation of new technologies and processes, as well as new developments in legislation and sustainability requirements.


With this in mind, the blu-3 team places a lot of focus and resource into developing new innovative solutions for client needs, regardless of the restrictions their projects place upon them.

When existing technologies or processes cannot be adapted to a client’s site, for example in brownfield sites or older infrastructure, blu-3 has the resources, along with a number of innovation partners, to research and develop new technologies and processes to meet the needs of our broad range of clients.

To date, we have developed a number of new ideas with thorough research and development solving a number of challenges presented to us by our clients in the infrastructure market. A simple example of an innovation developed by blu-3 and Olive Media is provided below highlighting the breadth of research and development blu-3 adopts.

blu-3 has undertaken significant R&D activity in a number of relevant fields. Its intention is to keep ahead of its competitors to ensure that it can provide its clients with leading edge solutions. Some of the research has included:

  • Examining opportunities to use more sustainable construction materials on our sites,
  • Using renewable energy sources in our projects including ground source heat pumps,
  • Bespoke roadway lighting solutions to solve driver visibility problems,
  • Control and suppression of construction dust emissions and,
  • Intelligent car parking solution.

More recently, blu-3 has won the 2018 WEX Innovation Award for its approach to the circular economy in the construction of a sewer connection through a tunnel heading under one of the busiest underground stations in London. The strategy included, reuse of water on site for several construction purposes, reuse of excavated materials and completing a sewer connection which avoided any disruption to traffic and pedestrians on the very busy street above.

blu-3 has commissioned global research project of technologies related to its field of activity in the delivery of utility infrastructure. The study is being undertaken by a leading US company which specialises in this area using their own database of technologies and will include a unique international patent search called Patent Watch, their own proprietary software, and will ensure that blu-3 benefits from anything that is already in existence.

Industry experts in the relevant areas will be interviewed and the study will also draw on experience from related industries including, for example the mining sectors to ensure that appropriate technologies are not overlooked. In addition, research interviews will be required with end users in the targeted areas to obtain the desired level of resolution on innovative companies and technologies. The information and intelligence that is gathered is then synthesised to develop a bespoke analysis. Sector activities being examined for blu-3 include: utility installation technologies, material reuse, new materials, excavation technologies, robotics, BIM and 3D modelling, network interventions, IoT/ AI and sensor technologies.
